Frospiration: Meet Shernice!
1. What’s your name and where are you from?
My name is Shernice but I also go by my nickname – Chyna. I’m from the south of Johannesburg, Eldorado Park, South Africa.
2. Describe your hair a little (eg. hair porosity, hair type, hair texture, hair density, personality, etc).
I have low porosity, type 4a hair. My hair texture is a mixture between curly and kinky and my hair density is medium. My hair takes at least 2 days to dry completely when in twists or when using perm rods and flexi rods.
3. How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural for three years now. I big chopped 5 March 2016.

4. Why did you decide to go natural?
I started transitioning shortly after my father passed away. I decided to start transitioning back to natural during this time because I was starting a whole new journey and self-love was an important part of healing. And I started by learning to love my hair as it grows from my scalp.
5. What was the hardest thing about returning natural?
During my transitioning stage it wasn’t easy to manage my hair. It was extremely damaged because of heat, dye, and relaxers. Only flexi rods could give me a curl to mask my damaged hair. Wash and go’s looked terrible on my hair and I have pictures to prove it lol.
I only transitioned for 6 months before I decided to big chop and I wasn’t expecting my hair to be as short as it was. It took me some time to really figure that stage out.
6. What does your hair regimen comprise of?
I wash my hair at least once a week. I detangle and pre-poo my hair before washing. I use amla oil, coconut oil or aloe vera to pre-poo my hair.
I clarify my hair once every 6 weeks and I deep condition after every wash. I always cover my head while deep conditioning with either a shower cap or plastic bag. Sometimes I deep condition overnight.
When I style my hair I always use the L.O.C or L.C.O method. It’s important for me to start with a moisturizing leave in conditioner and seal my hair off with a good sealant to ensure my hair retains moisture.

7. What do you love most about your hair?
What I love most about my hair is the versatility. There is such a variety of ways I could wear my hair.
8. What do you dislike most about your hair?
I dislike how difficult it is to moisturize and retain moisture with low porosity hair and also the amount of time it takes for my hair to dry completely.
9. Which 3 products do you swear by?
Afrotame Leave-in Conditioner, Afrotame Whipped Mango Butter and Caivil Marula Oil Leave-in Masque.

10. What are your top 3 hair tips?
Don’t be afraid to trim your hair! Health over length always.
Low maintenance hairstyles help ensure you retain length.
Always remember to deep condition your hair.
11. Any encouragement for rookie naturals?
Don’t spend all your time obsessing over what stage you are in but just enjoy every stage you go through with your hair. This is how you learn how to care for your hair and learn your hair.
12. Where can people find you online (Instagram/YouTube/Facebook, etc.)?
You can find me on Instagram: @afro.child and on YouTube: Chyna’s curls
